What is “Type-to-Learn” Chinese? |
IQChinese’ cutting-edge technology integrates computer input of Chinese as both a fifth language skill and a practical tool to make the process of learning Chinese more efficient, effective, and rewarding. Typing Chinese involves entering the correct pinyin aka Romanized sounds for Chinese syllables, and then selecting the correct tone. Learning accurate pinyin is crucial to speaking Chinese well. In the IQChinese Go Courseware series, pinyin keyboarding forms the basis of a new learning method that lets learners use the language in a practical and engaging way very early on in their studies. Students using the “Type-to-Learn” Chinese method learn Chinese characters more quickly, have better retention, and write more effective compositions than students learning by traditional methods. The “Type-to-Learn” Chinese method is additionally useful for students who will take the new AP Chinese test, which requires computer interaction.

Do my students really need to learn to type Chinese? |
First, students who use IQChinese courseware learn Mandarin Chinese via typing. Second they learn the skill of typing Chinese in the process. While most foreign languages can be typed on a computer keyboard, Chinese with its thousands of characters is obviously different. Most students already use keyboarding skills daily to write assignments, do research, email friends, and text message on their cell phones. International business people do the same. In our modern society, the ability to communicate by keyboarding is a must. To learn Mandarin Chinese and simultaneously learn to keyboard in that language is a huge plus.

Does IQChinese “Type-to-Learn” replace the role of the classroom teacher? |
Not at all, it only enhances the teacher’s role. A teacher is one voice in a classroom. Sometimes students are distracted, unmotivated or unruly and that one voice is not heard. Students who “Type-to-Learn” Chinese are using multiple senses in the process of acquiring a new language. They must get familiar with new characters; recognize the sounds and tones of the characters as well as the character’s individual shapes. They then must recall what they have learned and input it into the computer with correct pinyin and tones. If typed correctly, students will receive immediate visual and auditory feedback. Additionally, this same learning process, with visual and aural feedback, can be continued at home even if the student’s parents are unable to speak Chinese themselves.
